Hey everybody. JR Fisher here at the lake Miramar here in San Diego when to stop and talk to you guys real quick about success and what we think it is and what it really is. A lot of people say well success is having all the money and having all the toys and having all the cool stuff and all that. And I don’t think it is a number of years ago I was at a Panera Bread and I was having lunch. And you know they have those employees there in the clear the tables after you eat and you know they’ll put away the dishes and they wait til you get up and you walk out the door and then they clear it all out so you don’t have to do it. So that’s nice. You know it’s nice that you have third table but there was this one special guy that worked there and he looked to be about 50 maybe early 50s and he wasn’t doing what every other employee was doing you know it was noticed in some of the employees they were standing off to the side and they would watch when people got up from their table and then would go over and clear their table. You know clearly that’s what their job was right. Not to him.
His job was in his mind. Now this is in his mind was to make everybody’s experience better. How did he do that. Well if he saw somebody getting up and they had plates in their hand they were walking towards the trash can to throw their stuff away. He would intercept them and he would take the plates from them and he’d say I’ve got this for you you probably have to go back to work and he would take the plates. He would go around to the tables and he would look at their drinks and he would say you’re low on that drink can I go get you some more what are you drinking. He would see if they had napkins. He would see if the table was dirty he would clean it up and his effort level was just off the charts. Nobody in the room was doing anything like what he was doing. And I watched him. I had been in there a couple of days and every time I was there he did that. You know I mean I couldn’t get to the trash with my plates right. He he would intercept me and grab all my stuff. And you know I was thinking in the back of my mind with that poor guy you know he’s in his 50s and he’s clearing tables at this Panera Bread but he was like the happiest employees there there and I felt like he worked so hard one day that I just handed my 20 dollar bill and you know it made me feel good you know to give this guy something extra my God he’s doing so much extra work. I just I feel guilty. Know I feel bad for him and I was in there another day and I noticed somebody else giving him money and I wasn’t there another day.
Did somebody else give anybody that I saw so many people going up to him going man you’re awesome you’re really helping everybody out you’re bringing us condiments you’re bringing us napkins you’re you know clearing our table for us you’re bringing us drinks. And he got nothing but positive feedback all day long. Now that job you could say well that job’s not important it doesn’t matter. No it does matter a matter of fact everything matters. Every single thing you do matters. And if you’re doing it half ass it’s probably because you don’t want to be seen as a failure. You want to be successful. Here’s what I mean by that. If let’s say you have a term paper to do for school and you don’t put a lot of effort into it and you get a C. Well you can say you know I didn’t even try. Kind of threw that thing together you know I’m like I even got to C you on it. But if you had put all your effort into it and you had you know from the day it was assigned to you to the day it was do you worked on it some every day and you made it as polished as you could and you got to see you would say woof. My best my best efforts got to C. That’s horrible. So what a lot of people tend to do in most situations is they don’t put best effort. I can’t talk to them I’m putting forth my best effort I guess but they they tend to not put forth all they can. The most they can because if they do that and then they fail their best efforts have failed and they can’t handle that. That’s too much. Can’t do that right. So what a lot of people do is they tend to kind of half assed everything you know well I’m going to start this.
You know e-commerce business and you know I may run an ad or two I’m only going to spend like 20 30 bucks to see what it does. And then if it doesn’t do well they can quit and they don’t have to feel bad because they didn’t give it their best effort and it didn’t do well. But you know so what. You know they really try that hard to what difference does it make right. It all makes a big difference because every time you do a little bit less every time you don’t try your best every time you don’t put forth your best effort. It doesn’t matter if you failed at it or you won at it. What matters is in your mind you know that you’re not doing what you should be doing. And that wears on you more than any failure could ever wear on you. You know if you have a term paper to do or you have a speech to do or you know there’s some part of your job that they tell you to do at work and you don’t do it with your best effort you’re wearing yourself down you’re failing already. OK. It doesn’t even matter if they still pay you. You’re failing. I’m telling you failing because success really it’s not how much money you’ve got. It’s not how many things you have or you know how many people walk around admiring you. You know if you’ve got the best body or you’re the best looking person what success really is is how much you’re putting forth. And a lot of people say well you know that guy is just lucky or she’s just lucky they get all the breaks.
You know lucks all around you you know luck there every single day luck doesn’t go home you know. And luck is not something that’s going to find you if you go sit in a corner somewhere and tap on the shoulder. Here I am I’m locking you I’m lucky today because I just showed up Luck’s not bad luck is all around you and it waits for you to be prepared. It waits for you to try your best to show up to be there to you know try different things so you can find the lucky thing. But if you don’t and you do everything half assed and you just do it like you don’t give a shit. You know what. Lucky you get to show up. It’s not going to be either. It’s not going to happen. I started off selling stuff online started off some cell phone cases and I was successful and not monetarily.
I didn’t sell hardly any of my own and make any money. But why was I successful I was successful because I kept going and I found some other things that did work. So you know you can say well JR you failed in selling cell phone cases because you never made any money and you ended up with a bunch of old inventory in your closet your bedroom and you couldn’t get rid of it.
You would be pretty much to pay people to take it away. That stuff is true. That’s that’s very true. But if I hadn’t of tried and if I had to try to sell those things online and if I hadn’t tried to do my best I wouldn’t found the next product and the next product. And now I’ve got several courses out on how to still sell stuff online and some are more successful than other ones. But I wouldn’t have had any of it. If I hadn’t tried my best in the beginning because I would have just quit. I would have said you know I’m not lucky which I don’t consider myself lucky at all I really don’t. I would never play the lottery or do anything like that but I don’t think that’s what luck is any anyhow I think luck is when you know you’re really prepared you’re really trying hard and something comes along and you notice it and you’re ready for it.
That’s really what luck is. So I wouldn’t even be sitting here talking to you today if I didn’t you know try to sell those cell phone cases and become a failure. You know as some people see it I just want to share that with you today How hard are you trying and what you do and the things that matter to everything it’s everything everything matters. It matters how well you wash the dishes at night. It matters how well you iron your shirt everyday. Everything matters because all of that effort spills over into your successes and if and if you’re not trying on the little things. What makes you think you’re going to try on a big thing. What makes you think you’re gonna do your best when that huge stroke of luck comes along. If you’re not even trying to do your best on a little things makes no sense. Think about it today know as you as you go out through your day and tomorrow morning and tonight with your kids with your family are you trying your best in every single area or are you doing the best you can. And will you be able to all the time. No of course not. I can’t I can’t. Sometimes I forget to try my best. But if you never remind yourself and you never try your best. What do you think your odds are of being successful.
However you judge it probably not real good. Go out there do your best. Talk to you later.
